Kobus Moller was born and raised in Fort Victoria (now called Mazvingo) in the little country of Rhodesia, which is now called Zimbabwe. He went to school there until he was 15, then went to school in South Africa.

After school he served with the Rhodesian army at the beginning of the bush war. Much of that time was spent in the Zambezi Valley. He considered this a very important time in his life, because this was his first real exposure to the big game of Africa. He studied at the University of Pothefstroom and graduated in 1972. That same year he married his wife Vita. They have three children, a son and two daughters. His studies had nothing to do with art. He taught Phys Ed, English as a second language, and religious studies. He considered himself a failure as a teacher and resigned after two years. He then started painting and teaching pottery, something he had just recently been exposed to at the time. After another two years he went back to teaching but this time taught art. This was actually surprising to him because he had no art training. After another two years he was called up for military service in the South African Army. In this time served he was in a unit responsible for the production of audiovisual aids. The work was stimulating and creative. He enjoyed it immensely. When he left the army he motivated the establishment of a similar unit in the education department. His request was granted and he was asked to head the department. For the next ten years he threw himself into his career, and was convinced this was where he would retire. However, he could not get very high up on the promotion ladder with the qualifications he had. So he enrolled in the University of South Africa for his masters degree. Half way through this he started thinking seriously about his future. With this degree his promotion would be open. He suddenly saw himself at an office in the Head Office. All motivation disappeared, and he spent the rest of his sabbatical painting. He was so successful, that he resigned his job the first day he was back at work and started painting full time three months later.

It is important to Kobus that we explain that his decision was a spiritual decision made in prayer, involving the whole family. His youngest daughter, then 8 years, had the same vote he had. The vote to resign was unanimous.
